                                Pomeranian Puppy Uglies

Furbabies go threw a change in their puppy coats that if you are not familiar with this change or never had a pom before it can be quite a shock. They will loose their puppy fur. I have found that these changes can take place at different times. Some babies loose the fur earlier in their puppy age and some may not start till little later. I have noticed that usually around 12 to14 weeks there may be some thinning, and the fur can become straggly. Don’t be alarmed if this can start a bit earlier or sometimes may not happen till later. Some babies get worse than others. The poms at this time look taller and longer and the nose may even look longer till the fluff comes back. They then become their gorgeous ball of fur and you think where are those legs and what happened to that nose. I usually don’t do a lot of long brushing until I see most of it comes back and fur gets thicker, this will start around 6 months, then I start to brush up and pull everything forward to bring back their beautiful adult style. They should be back in coat around 10 months but again this may vary, some may be sooner others may take a bit longer. Poms can take up to 3 years to get their complete coat. It is amazing because you think this furkids is the most beautiful baby in the world and they can’t get more beautiful and believe me they can and they do. I have some babies that don’t go threw much at all. I have others babies you might say that’s ugly, I say that it reminds me when Jake and Jenny my teenagers were about in 1st to 2 nd grade and losing their baby teeth and most of the time the first two front at the same time. I always called it their awkward stage and very cute until everything comes back to place. I still took tons of pictures of Jake and Jenny and oh how they love looking at them lol NOT. I also take tons pictures of the babies and not afraid to show them or display them on my website cause this is part of being a furbaby. When this is all over there is more fluff then you can imagine. I like to make sure when I have new families here taking these babies home I go over this information. Sometimes the babies may already be starting in this coat change, especially if it is a older baby leaving for their new home instead of the 8 week period. If you are familiar with these babies you know that when this change takes place and they grow back their new coat they are more gorgeous then when they were puppies.

Females after birth also loose a great deal of their coats. This will happen around the time you are about to find new homes for your babies and everyone want to see mommy. Mommy has started to loose that coat and believe me when I say she will loose most of it. I explain this to the new possible family of the babies. I always say what new mom looks good after birthing babies. Being a pom or any new mom it takes time to look good after birthing babies and taking care of them. Moms will get this back though, better than ever.

     BrandiPooh's Special Tips

Pomeranians are the most wonderful babies you can add to your family. They are very loving, intelligent, and  so much company for any family. Our babies are a very important part of our family and we enjoy each and every moment we spend with each and everyone. They know what I am feeling, they pick up on sad time as well as happy times. We all respond to them as well as they to us. Sometimes you think they are just going to start talking. Communication is great when you can tell what they want, you know when they are in pain, you know when they are sad and happy, they understand the same with us.

Having the furkids have brought to me many learning experiences and I know that I have a lot more to come, to me this makes allot to look forward to. I have did a lot of research and studying about the poms and have  had a lot of help threw so many wonderful people. I have found you never know to much and there is more to learn. I also say there is never a dumb question and you can never ask to many, this just shows how much you care and how much you want to learn and understand these wonderful furkids.

I would like to share a few things that I have learned and some helpful hints if ever you decide to add this little member to your family and know also that I am always here to help to anyone that needs me. I am only a phone call or email away. We are all here to help each other. I am here for anyone and will share my knowledge to all that ask, you don't have to have one of BrandiPooh's special babies, I just like to be there when needed. Furkids are one of my favorite conversations, ask my family and anyone that knows me.

First let me start at the diet we use. Science Diet Small Bites for Puppies. Science Diet Small Bites for Adults. This is recommended by Vet and I have found only good things when feeding this to my kids. They also love it and never had problems allergies and my kids are very healthy. This is only my recommendation everyone has their own diet they love. For new families I give a bag to take home so they can try, if they choose to change they have some of the Science Diet to mix with their diet till they make the full change. This is good to do so they don't get belly aches and they get use to their new diet. I also love the Science Diet Biscuits. They have them in Puppies and adults also. Science Diet can be purchased at any Pet Smart, PetCo or Tractor Supply.

When my babies leave here and go to their new home, they take along a puppy care kit, with the Science Diet Puppy, and also the puppy biscuits. I only use the dry diet but again that is a matter of preference. Babies also take along toys that I find safe for them to play with and ones that they have been used to playing with here. They enjoy the little tennis like balls that can be found in the pet stores. They love the little ropes. Poms also love the little toys that squeak but please be careful that you pick up safe ones that they can't get to the squeakers or while playing it happens to get torn apart and can be a chance of them finding the squeaker, this could cause them to choke. I have toy boxes here in every room. I pick up constantly and always looking to see that there are no loose pieces. The furkids are right behind me to pull them all out of the toy boxes. Rawhides can be safe if you choose the right ones. I also give ones that I find very safe and never had any problems. Just be careful  not to choose the ones that splinter. This can be very good for them with cleaning the teeth. Poms can be known of having teeth problems so they should always be checked when going to get their annual exams. Also you may have to keep a eye on the baby teeth and the secondary teeth. I have found that the bottoms may have the double canines and these may have to be pulled if they don't fall. Have your vet keep a close eye on these. Keeping them in for a long period of time when they are in the double positions can cause build up and food can stay and make your babies very sick.

Brushing and Bathing your furkids is also very important.  When brushing or even sitting and petting always go upwards. Butt up to the head. Most like to pet or brush from head down, this is very common, with the pom it can flatten their coat. Going in a upward position gives lots of fluff. Use a spritz bottle when brushing of water. I have found that rain water is wonderful. A large tooth comb is great and also a large tooth brush. Pin brush is good for brushing as long as you get a pin brush that don't have the little plastic balls that come off the tips. Wide pin brush is what I like to use. Brush at least 3 times a week. Places to pay special attention to that gets very knotty is behind the ears under arms and legs.  Slicker brush is good for blow drying. Blow dry with a no heat or low heat drier. I use the Command Performance Forced Air dryer that can be purchased at Pet Edge. http://www.petedge.com/   Shampoo's that I love are Puppy love and Johnsons baby shampoo. Coats are  nice fluffy and skin don't become dry. I constantly wipe my kids off and sponge bath.  Depending on how much your kids go and depends on how much they may need a full bath. At least every 3 weeks is a good idea. I also love the puppy love cologne smells like baby powder. Keep their nails trimmed at least every 3 weeks also and trim under their little paws they hair that sticks out. My kids don't mind trimming the ones that do I use a nail file. The large buffer nail file that I use for myself. They can tend to be nervous and not like the sound of a pet file so this may take down the anxiety. Use a good ear cleaner to wash out the ears and q tip to wipe out. Please don't dig in their little ears.

Poms eyes tend to run and get watery, get another pom they take care of this. If you don't like that helpful hint it only takes a warm wash cloth or baby wipe to take care of this.

When you bring your new baby home,  puppy or adult pom can be a very exciting as well as stressful day for all. I have found in the car ride home take something in case the pom gets a upset stomach. You may need to stop to clean up the baby and yourself. I hold them on a tile or blanket and found out just recently if I let them hide either in my coat or under a blanket they will stress less and feel more secure. It is a good idea though to have the paper towels.

Our kids here are our family and have free run of the house. I have baby gates threw out the house for ones that have accident and stay in one room till they learn the potty routine. Our young babies after weaned from mom stay in the fisher price play yard and when supervised have free run to let off a lot of energy. This time they are paper trained. I find this method to be a great one, they have some idea of the potty routine till they either start with all the other kids, and let outside or go to their new home for their new families ways. I have a fenced in back and front yard. I still do supervise them when they are outside, being so small there are many things that can occur and you can never be to safe. Be very careful of unwanted visitors such as hawks, little visitors that can dig and come under the fence. We are all fenced in here and make it as safe as we can but always keep that eye open and listen for those little voices.

Each and every room here there are furkids.  I wouldn't have it any other way. I do have to watch though cause some like to follow me and stay real close to my feel. If you have very tiny ones or even the adult poms you have to be careful of the ones you know that will be close by. I know the ones to watch for in each room under foot. This will be a routine you will get use to doing and watching for them.  I have fallen trying to not fall on them. This is also a good reason you might want to think over the size baby you want to add to your family. I have ones here that are 3 pounds full grown them I have to really watch. Nice size of a pom for a family with children in my opinion would be 5 to 7 pounds. Then again I tell people and everyone asks how big are they going to be full grown. Unless it is a repeat breeding I will only give a estimate weight. If it is a female and a male that had babies and I have known the size of prior babies I will know better. I will never guarantee a weight size but at times I can give a pretty good estimate. It also depends on the new homes and feeding environment and snacks also. I feed here 2 times daily each and every kids gets its own spot and dish. I am guilty of snacks at times but I do try not to over due. Poms have no fear, and some can be pretty good jumpers if they get over weight this could be very harmful to them and could cause back problems and when running and jumping also could cause them to break their little bones. My Brandi is very guilty of loving popcorn, well they all do. I never sit down with a bowl alone. My Pebbles likes to sit under my recliner chair when the recliner is pushed out right under my legs. Before I get up and I push back in the chair I look to make sure their is no Pebbles hiding and watching for falling popcorn.

Foods that I know for sure that is a big NO NO. Ice Cream, Chocolate, Pork, hot or spicy foods, greasy or fried foods. If you have a cat in your home as we do and all the babies here are familiar with our cat as he with them. They all get along greatly. Please keep the cat food out of reach of the poms. They tend to love to eat the kitty food and this is not good for them. Other then not giving them the proper nutrition they need it can make them very large in size.

Playing outside especially in the flea season, I like to use advantage. I usually have no problem with this but I don't take the chance.

Be very careful of different plants. In door and outside. I love the Pointsetta Plant at Christmas time. If you have these in your home please keep them high from the furkids and not around on the floors and also have them on a place if a leaf should fall it won't hit the floor or a place you know your baby will be. This plant is very poisonous not only to poms but all of our pets.

These are some things I have learned and I am sure I will be adding to this list. There are many safety things we can do for babies. Please make sure when not at home your babies are in a safe place where they can't get hurt or into things that are unsafe for them. It is a good idea to have your vet's number by your phone in case of a emergency. If you have ideas and know of some safety care tips you would like to share with me please do.  If  I can be of some help to you please feel free to contact me. We are all here to help each other and make it nice for our family pets.

Please remember Pomeranian are not harmful and are not yelpers. They only let you know when they are hungry, need to potty or aware that someone different is around. You can teach your pom not to bark all the time. They are not ankle biters. They are not harmful at all. They only hurt the ones that hurt them. If you know of any pet that has been mistreated or harmed or abused please contact your local authorities.

I am a hobby breeder and I do it for the love of the breed and what the breed has done for me and my family.   The mommies here are my girls first before they are the mommies to your babies. I do not over breed them and don't breed them every heat cycle. Some of the girls never have babies. My goal is to breed within the standard and better the breed. Not all of them end up that way but they are NOT loved any less. Some are pet quality and some are champion quality. I would love some day to have one in the show ring and finish them as champions. This goal is something that takes a lot of time. Not all poms are show poms but here in our family they are all champions. We are not all Mr. America's and Miss America's either. We are all children of God. Each and everyone of us has a different quality that makes us special and this is the same as the poms. Remember the breed started as the Husky family. I love being with the poms and studying them and learning all I can and that is a big recommendation I give to all that plan on having them as a family member. Get to know all you can and when looking talk to your breeders, learn about them, this is a big part of the kind of pet you will be getting. Get to know their environment. Ask about their parents. Go to their environment spend time with them.  I welcome anyone here.. You learn a lot about the baby you will bring home by the place they are born and raised, but if this is not possible to do get to know your breeder. I myself welcome visitors, newborn babies are not shown until it is safe and been checked by my vet.  My babies are all up to date on shots, when they leave they have their first set of puppy shots and are wormed and have been to my vet right before they leave. Older puppies may be started in more sets of shots depending on the age of the puppy when they leave for their new family.  I am against others pets coming to my home unless they have had  their shots and up to date on their health check ups. This I am sure anyone understands.

My special thanks to First Chet my partner in life, my son Jake and daughter Jenny. My vet for being there for me at all hours of the night and even coming to my home when needed. John Lyon.  Special thanks to my friends and fellow breeders.
